To be selected is a high honor. For two best friends to be selected in back-to-back years? That’s a testament to the creativity, purpose, and service we strive to cultivate — not just individually, but together.

In 2024, Jake Engel was recognized for his multifaceted approach to leadership. Whether he’s crafting strategic communications for major organizations, coaching fitness classes, or serving on the board of local nonprofits, Jake brings energy, empathy, and storytelling to every space he enters. As he puts it, his life “has always been a bit of a portfolio — dabbling in this, exploring that, and embracing adventure along the way.” His work has helped reposition multiple organizations to better resonate with their audiences, and he continues to lead public relations and media strategy with a focus on authenticity and impact.

In 2025, Karmen Johnson earned her place on the list for her dynamic blend of artistry and strategy. As a marketing and communications consultant to multiple companies, she weaves together corporate communications, graphic design, brand strategy, creative direction, and educational content development. A few years ago, she developed her own creative studio with the intention of bringing stories to life in the world — transforming blank walls into vibrant murals, elevating interior spaces, and helping businesses express their identity through visual storytelling.

Together, Jake and Karmen represent what it means to lead with purpose, passion, and a portfolio of talents. Their back-to-back recognition by IBJ is a reflection of the bold ideas, shared values, and collaborative spirit that fuel their work and friendship.
